
Programmes and Degrees available at the
Theological College of Northern Nigeria
From its inception, TCNN has offered different certificates and diplomas in
theology. In 1980 TCNN began to offer a Bachelor of
Divinity Degree (BDD) in affiliation with the University of Jos.
In 1991 TCNN began to offer a Master of Theology (MTH)
with the intention of being affiliated with the University of Jos.
At present, there are about 300 students at the college in all programs.
BACHELOR OF DIVINITY DEGREE
The Bachelor of Divinity Degree (BDD) is normally a four-year degree, but
it can be done in fewer years depending upon the student's entry qualifications.
All candidates for the Bachelor of Divinity Degree (full-time or part-time)
must be recommended by the College, and qualified under any one of the following:
- The School Certificate (WASC) with credits in at least five (5) subjects
including English, obtained at not more than two sittings.
- The General Certificate of Education (GCE) O' level in at least five
(5) subjects including English and obtained at not more than two sittings.
- The Teacher's Grade II Certificate with Credit/Merit in at least five
(5) subjects including English obtained at not more than two sittings.
- Other Certificates recognised as of equal value for entry to Nigerian
Universities are acceptable subject to approval in each case by the College.
- NCE holders may take the Degree course in three years provided that
one of their major subject areas is in Christian Religious Studies or equivalent.
- Holders of a Diploma in Religious Studies or in Theology recognised
by the College may take the Bachelor of Divinity Degree in three years provided
they have three credits including English obtained at not more than two sittings.
- Holders of a Diploma in Theology or Religious Studies in a three-year
programme recognised by the College, may take the Degree in Divinity in two
years provided they have three credits including English obtained at not
more than two sittings.
- Degree holders entering a three year or two year course and have no
previous theological training need to take three(3) BDD1 courses:- O.T.and
N.T.Introduction (BDD 100/101) and Hermeneutics and Exegesis(BDD102).
MASTER OF THEOLOGY DEGREE
The Master of Theology (MTH) degee is a two-year programme with a concentration
in a single area of theology. In the years 2000 to 2002 TCNN will offer
a master's degree in Church History and Practical Theology.
Administration
- The Master of Theology degree programme is developed and administered
according to the procedure established by TCNN. By virtue of its affiliation
with the University of Jos, the programme also follows the guidelines and
requirements of that University.
- The programme is directly supervised by the Academic Committee of TCNN,
together with a representative from the University who shall normally be a
member of the Department of Religious Studies and is competent in the general
theological tradition of TCNN, attending meetings of the Academic Committee
when matters affecting affiliation are concerned. The Academic Dean
shall be in regular consultation with the appropriate authorities of the
University of Jos for the benefit of this programme. He/she or his/her
appointee also represents TCNN's interests, should the need arise, at the
appropriate committees of the University, for the programme.
- Upon approval of the student's area of specialization in this programme,
the Academic Committee shall appoint an advisor who shall be responsible for
the general overseeing of the student's work and who shall also supervise
the dissertation.
- The topic for the dissertation shall be submitted in writing by the
student through his/her supervisor to the Academic Committee for approval
not later than at the completion of the first ten (10) credits.
- This programme is subject to revision by the Academic Committee on
the basis of further experience.
